Happy Birthday, Marilyn Monroe!

Her birthday will be this Sunday, June 1st.
"It's all make believe, isn't it?"

"If I'd observed all the rules, I'd never have gotten anywhere."

"I don't mind living in a man's world as long as I can be a woman in it."

"I don't want to make money. I just want to be wonderful."

"I'm very definitely a woman and I enjoy it."

Lego Indiana Jones

Okay, last post (for a while at least....) in celebration of the new Indiana Jones movie. This time a recreation of a scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" -- or is it? -- using Legos.

Weekend Re-cap

Well it was quite a weekend. First of all on Friday I got my Wii Fit that I had pre-ordered on Amazon.com. It's so fun -- I did yoga, hula hooping, ski jumping, jogging, stretching, and all sorts of stuff for about an hour a day on Friday, Saturday, and Monday. And let me tell ya -- you really feel it working! This thing is fantastic, and so much fun!

And I went to go see Indiana Jones #4 on Saturday with Dyno. I had bought tickets for the Arclight in Sherman Oaks, and we were supposed to meet Guitar Joe and his girl there. But when the time got closer and closer and they still hadn't shown, I started to get worried. We had to all walk in together because I had one ticket for all four of us. Well finally Joe calls and says, "Where are you guys??" and I said, "We're at the bar waiting for you!" And he says, "So are we and we don't see you!" And finally I said, "Are you at the Arclight in Hollywood?" and he goes, "Yeah, where are you?" "Sherman Oaks!!" Well by now it's too late for them to make it to S.O. in time, so I tell him to just drive over and we'll figure something out. Then I look at the tickets and they're for the Hollywood theater. So I'm the bonehead, not Joe. We finally got it all straightened out with Customer Service -- Dyno and I went to a later show in S.O., and they just went without us to the showing in Hollywood. But what a mess!

After the movie -- which was awesome!! -- we went to Ben & Jerry's. There we spotted a famous person, and Dyno and I were nudging each other like "Is that? Is that...?" Finally Dyno goes up to the star and says something, and the guy just nods inexpressively. So I ask Dyno what he said to him. He says, "I said, 'Hey, Carlos, I love your show." As in Carlos Mencia.

I started laughing. "Dyno, that wasn't Carlos Mencia -- that was George Lopez!" Dyno was embarrassed for about a second, until we both thought about it. So George Lopez was identified incorrectly -- and mistaken as his biggest rival. The stand-up comedian still makes a bajillion more money than we'll ever make.

Anyway, before Dyno approached him I snuck a picture.
It was definitely a great weekend.

Gonna See it Saturday...

This thing better live up to the hype and the expectations of every fan out there (including me!).
I'm gonna see it at the Arclight, the greatest way to watch a movie in the world. Haha.

Goodyear's Sexist Commercials from the Past

First: "When There's No Man Around"...apparently a woman is helpless!

...And "when your wife has to drive alone," she suddenly lands in a 70's action film montage. "When a woman's at the wheel"...God help us all.

Crushing on James Garner (Still)

I haven't seen or heard any additional news about James Garner after his surgery, following his stroke.
Let's continue to send good thoughts his way!

Happy Birthday, Jimmy Stewart!

"Sometimes I wonder if I'm doing a Jimmy Stewart imitation myself."

"I'd like people to remember me as someone who was good at his job
and seemed to mean what he said."

"I don't act. I react."

"I'm the inarticulate man who tries. I don't really have all the answers, but for some reason, somehow, I make it."

"If I had my career over again? Maybe I'd say to myself, speed it up a little."

Posture Pals!

One of the greatest MST3K shorts ever made. Get your posture pal and the two of you can be the King and Queen of Posture! Yaaayyyy!!!

Monday's This & That

While we try to beat the heat here in the Lounge with a little dip, take a look at what's going on...

The Rat Pack Ultimate Collectors Edition is now on sale at Amazon.com, and includes "Oceans 11," "Robin and the 7 Hoods," "4 for Texas," and "Sergeants 3."

And it's been 45 years since the fantastic war adventure "The Great Escape" was released. Steve McQueen heads up an all-star cast that includes James Garner, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, and many others. Watch it on AMC this Sunday. Check local listings for time. (Tonight on AMC is "The Magnificent Seven," also with McQueen, Coburn, and Bronson. Check AMC's website to see what time in your area!)

And I saw "Iron Man" over the weekend. Loved it! It's the perfect summer blockbuster movie. Good to see Robert Downey, Jr. back in action. Can't wait for the sequels.

Mature or Cowardly?

We're rounding up what's turned out to be a week of western appreciation, and more importantly James Garner appreciation. (Apparently he's doing well after his surgery. But we're keeping him in our prayers!)

In this clip from "Support Your Local Sheriff," James Garner reveals to Joan Hackett how he plans on dealing with bad guys heading in to town.

Westworld: Yul Brynner Showdown

Continuing on our westerns kick, here's a clip from the 1973 film "Westworld." James Brolin and Richard Benjamin star as two men who go to a fantasy camp-style resort and spend $1,000 a day to be gunslingers in the old west. Enter Yul Brynner, who is the resident badass. And a robot that just won't die.
And when things take a strange turn...

Get Well Soon, James Garner

This just in: 80-year-old James Garner hospitalized, has surgery after stroke

James Garner's publicist says the veteran TV and film star has been hospitalized in Los Angeles after suffering a minor stroke at his home last week.

Publicist Jennifer Allen said Tuesday that the star of "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files" was hospitalized Friday. Allen says Garner is doing well and will be going home soon.

Garner, who turned 80 last month, rose to prominence in the 1950s as "Maverick," a wry riverboat gambler who, unlike his TV contemporaries, would often run rather than fight.

Today his publicist said he underwent surgery on Sunday after suffering the stroke.

...His prognosis following the operation was described as "very positive," Allen said, adding that his vital signs were good, and he was expected to be discharged from the hospital soon.

Allen said she had no other details about the circumstances of Garner's stroke or his condition.

Get well, Jimmy! We love you.

Mudscene from "McLintock!"

Still on the 60's western kick, here's the best scene from the movie "McLintock!" (1963), a huge fight that starts off with John Wayne's "the hell I will!"The movie also stars Maureen O'Hara.

Return of the Escape to the Race to Witch Mountain

That's right, Disney once again cannot come up with an original feature film idea to save their life. Instead of coming up with something new, they keep cracking open the vault and redoing a movie from the past. They've redone "The Shaggy Dog," "The Absent-Minded Professor" ("Flubber"), "Parent Trap," "Freaky Friday," "That Darn Cat"...I've touched upon this in a past post about Disney sequels, but these remakes are getting out of hand, too.

Well the latest news is that they're remaking "Escape to Witch Mountain," the 1975 classic with the flying Winnebago, and calling it "Race to Witch Mountain." The copycat film will star former professional wrestler “The Rock,” as well as Cheech Marin. No news on who the kids will be yet, but I'm guessing they'll be some hot teen wanna-be's whom with Disney wants to create a signing career.

Lemme guess: In order to get Tia out of jail Tony will play an electric guitar instead of a harmonica, performing a new pop hit to make the broom and raincoat beat the guard up? Hey! I could be a Disney writer!!

C'mon Disney, seriously? You can't think of any new stories? Instead you have to rip off old movies and remake them until they're just teenie-bopped and commercialized carbon copies of the classic originals. Hire some better writers, guys. Hell, hire me! I'll regurgitate old stories better than "Flubber."

A Jail Without Bars

Okay, I know I'm obsessed. But if this clip from "Support Your Local Sheriff" doesn't make you love this movie, then I don't know what will! Bruce Dern makes the perfect foil to James Garner's sly sheriff, and Jack Elam is the classic deputy sidekick.P.S. Have I mentioned that James Garner is HOT??

Well, he is.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

To celebrate the Americanized holiday as an excuse to drink margaritas, here's the Muppet's Pepe the King Prawn's audition tape for the "spoke-shrimp" gig he landed for Long John Silver's. (Is this video completely irrelevant to the holiday? Probably. But he's one of my favorite characters.)
