Thanksgiving in the '40s
Thanksgiving is coming this way, and it makes me nostalgic (like all holidays do). How did our country celebrate in the 1940's, with the war and everything?
Well we don't need a time machine to find out. I just found this interesting blog post by Sentimental Journey about what Thanksgiving was like in the 1940s. Very interesting read, especially with how far we've come!

How to Throw a 1950's Thanksgiving
Bustle.com provides us with a post detailing how to throw a Thanksgiving like the 1950s!
Are you finding that your family's modern Thanksgiving dinner is not traditional enough? Too many foods that actually taste good? Too much gender parity? Too fun? Well, then this year, you might want to consider having ... a 1950s Thanksgiving dinner! It's good for what ails ya! (if "what ails ya" is greater awareness of racism and sexism, that is).
While the 1950s had enviable interior design and some really cute women's clothing, it was, in general, a crappy decade for almost everyone — from the straight white men who were expected to repress their emotions and work themselves senseless to support their families, to the straight white women expected to have no ambitions outside being a homemaker, to anyone who was not straight and white, who had to deal with constant degrading treatment and basically having no rights in the eyes of the law. And the post-war decade's Thanksgiving celebrations were a microcosm of the era's trends and social problems — unthinking sexism and racism, emotional repression, and Jell-O based food-stuffs.
That doesn't mean that parts of 1950s Thanksgiving celebrations weren't campy and adorable, of course — I mean, Marilyn Monroe dressed as a pilgrim? How precious!
If you'd like to learn more about a difficult and confusing period in our nation's history, read on for our guide to how to do your Thanksgiving — 1950s style. However, unlike Marilyn, you should probably plan on wearing pants.

Holiday Windup
Sorry I haven't blogged in a while. The holidays kicked my ass. Thank goodness my family drinks so I could survive the exhilaration of tons of family and lots of food and booze. (And thankfully one of my family members gave me this sign as a Christmas present!) While dry out and get back in to the swing of things, check out these previous posts of holiday seasons past...
Early in to starting the blog back in "ought-5" (2005), I was delighted to find these old holiday ads.
Later that year, my Christmas recap was kind of a downer, due to budget restraints.
In 2007, I was pretty pissed of with the media's portrayal of Christmas.
In 2008, I reflected how horrible the "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" kids' special really is.
Later that same year, I was feeling really nostalgic and introspective, reflecting on Christmas when I was a kid.
I had quite the turnaround this year, as my Christmas and New Years was full of lots of family, food, and cocktails. I hope all of yours was just as good!

Sketchy Santas
Yeah, I know. It's been an eternity since my last post. A lot has happened. The best part (and the part that you'll actually care about) is that I got a new laptop so I can blog more often now. Aren't you excited?Anyway, as Christmas is fast approaching, you gotta see the best of the worst Santa pictures. These are men that would never see me on their lap. And that's saying a lot. Enjoy!
(By the way, doesn't the little girl in this picture look like Mara Wilson, the little girl in the 1994 version of "Miracle on 34th Street"?)

Leprechaun Spotted!
I don't know which is better: the 'amateur' sketch or the interview soundbites. Either way, this is hard-hitting news coverage.
Cocktail Recipe Du Jour
Happy St. Patrick's Day! (How do I look as a redhead?)Here's a special treat for you, called Emerald Isle. It's a minty gin cocktail and the perfect green drink for the day. A dash or two of bitters does help the drink considerably. While aromatic bitters are customary, mint bitters is an equally nice compliment, and if you're feeling a little wild, orange bitters are quite interesting.
Ingredients:
* 1 oz gin
* 1 tsp crème de menthe, green
* 2 dashes bitters
Preparation:
1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes.
2. Shake well.
3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Bottoms up! (And ready for pinching!)
