"Va Va Voom" Star of the Day

Joi Lansing

Joi Lansing was born Joyce Wassmansdorff in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 6, 1929. A buxom blonde model and actress, her earliest work was as a model, which eventually led to a weak film career.

On television she appeared on “The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickcock,” “I Love Lucy,” and “The Beverly Hillbillies” in a recurring role. Joi took a hiatus from films in 1950 while she concentrated on her modeling career.

In 1951, she married fellow actor Lance Fuller almost immediately after both had made brief appearances in the 1952 hit musical “Singin' in the Rain.” Fuller also acted in a number of B-films throughout the 1950s, including “This Island Earth” (featured in “MST3K: The Movie”) and “The Bride and the Beast,” written by Ed Wood. Lansing's marriage to Fuller lasted longer than many other celeb unions, ending 2 years later. With her film career dwindling, Lansing utilized her gorgeous figure to return to modeling.

What To Do On A Date

Reminiscent of the advice our friends dispense over at How to Get the Guy, here's an MST3K short from the 50's, called What To Do On a Date.

Thursday's This & That

As I'm spending a little time pampering myself, I can daydream about all the things floating around the internet...

Yay! The video game website play™ reports: "A new Guitar Hero-rival designed for kids has been revealed for the DS and the Wii by Disney. The new game will arrive in autumn." It's called Ultimate Band, and even though "the rhythm-action title is aimed at teenagers and younger kids," I still want it, because it's probably perfect for my skill-level...

And MSTK: The Movie (in widescreen, thankyouverymuch!) is available for pre-order from Amazon.com. "Normal view...normal view...NORMAL VIEW!!"

Well, my birthday's coming up... (*hint hint*)

P.S. Wow, my ass is really hanging out in this picture.

Friday's This & That

Well we're still doing a bit of redecorating around here, so pardon the dust. Until we get things straightened up, why don't we take a look around...

Thanks to Matthew for correcting me in the previous post...DVD's of Cinematic Titanic are available NOW! And speaking of Cinematic Titanic, the other half of the former MST3K crew (led by Mike Nelson) has been putting together RiffTrax: downloadable "riffs" that you can synch up with a movie to get that MST3K experience in your own home. Go to their site to see some great examples; there are also a lot on You Tube (just search under "rifftrax").

And for more fun at the expense of movies (or, as Dane Cook calls them "Cinematic Adventures"), go to The Trailer Mash for...well, mash-ups of trailers, obviously.

And lastly, for all those of you who read this blog regularly but haven't yet signed up to be my friend on The Lounge MySpace page...here's a reminder to do so: SIGN UP TO BE A FRIEND OF THE LOUNGE FOR PETESAKE. (Sheesh.) You'll be able to see many more slutty pictures of me and you'll hear some awesome tunes. Can't beat that, right?

Mildred Pierce - Redone! (Part 1)

Thanks to Joan Crawford on MySpace, I've discovered the hilarity of Mildred Pierce - Redone! Reminds me of MST3K but with that bitchy class that only Joan Crawford can bring. And this is only part one! There's also more genius of Joan Crawford redone at Jason+Elliot's MySpace page. They're the geniuses behind the magic.

Must-See Movie: The Brain That Wouldn't Die

The Brain That Wouldn't Die (1962)
One of the best B-horror movies ever, and one of the best MST3K experiments of all time, this 1962 classic is the best cinematic experience to enter my life.

A doctor who likes to experiment with dead body parts in his spare time gets into a car crash with his girlfriend. Although he emerges unscathed, she is sadly beheaded. As the fire of the crash consumes her body, the doctor instinctually saves her head, wrapping it in his coat, and runs to his desolate cabin-slash-laboratory (which happens to be running distance away, thankfully).

In the secret lab he manages to restore his beloved's head by hooking it up to tubes in a cheap lasagna pan of special so-scientific-they-never-explain-it juices. Phenomenally his gal Jan is able to speak (without lungs or any other airways - it's science, people - don't you get that??) where she endlessly nags her boyfriend to "let...me...die."

The BF instead goes out body-shopping (at a strip club, a swimsuit contest...even trolling the streets gawking at leggy women), planning on luring back the best model (*ahem*) to his cabin where he'll lop off her noggin. "Yes, I was at the strip bar. It's for science, hon. Do you want a body or not? I'm doing this for you, you know..."
In the meantime, Jan-in-the-pan makes friends with the freak behind the locked door, a mysteriously hideous beast who is a result of all the after effects of the grotesque experiments. She is able to command him, as they share a bond of disgusting freakishness. Not like their friendship can go that far. She can't help him move, can't drive him to the airport... it's a pretty limiting relationship.

At any rate, Jan may very well be my next Halloween costume next year...if I can just figure out how to keep the juices in the pan when I stick my head into it.
