Monday's This & That

Whilst I deal with Monday's "dog-eat-dog" feeling, how's abouts we see what's floating around the interwebs?

Let's start with this article of some "secrets" of Lucy and Ricky...you have to click a billion times to get them all, but hey - you had nothing better to do, right?

Here are 25 cocktail recipes that apparently everyone should know.  Study them all for the test on Friday (when you can drink yourself in to oblivion over the weekend).

So you like to read about grisly deaths on set, do you?  Well then this article is for you...some you may have heard of, others not so much.  Unfortunately, most deaths are from dear stuntmen just doing their job.

And lastly, here's a list of 10 Audrey Hepburn Quotes with fabulous photos of her to peruse. #3's about makeup is particularly inspirational.

Enjoy!

Cocktail Recipe Du Jour

While I finished getting dressed, here's a quick drink recipe for you to try -- great as an after-dinner cocktail.

The Locust
In your cocktail shaker, pour:
1/2 oz. White Creme de Cacao
1/2 oz. White Creme de Menthe
1 1/2 oz. cream

Shake and strain in to a stemmed, chilled glass.
Float 1/2 oz. of Bacardi 151 on top.

...And if you hold the 151, you have a Cricket.

Cheers!

Wednesday's This & That

I'm still preparing for my favorite holiday, Halloween!  So while I wait, let's see what's floating around the internet...

Apparently, we Americans are spending a boatload of money this year for Halloween, mostly attributed to the fact that it falls on Friday.  2.2 BILLION DOLLARS are predicted to be spent this year on candy alone.  If you're a dentist, it's time to jack up your prices, because you'll be getting a lot of customers by January 2015.

Halloween on a Friday also means more parties, more events, and a lot more people dressing up in costume. Studies show that "consumers this year are spending $1.4 billion on adult costumes compared to $1.1 billion for children's costumes."

As far as costumes you should probably avoid, there's the offensive (like the Ray Rice costume), the newsworthy (in a Hazmat suit for the Ebola scare), and the downright pointless (crazy Amanda Bynes).  Choose wisely, my friends!

Cocktail Recipe Du Jour

Cigarettes?  Cigarettes?  Oh, there you are.  While I try to make a couple bucks at my evening job, enjoy this cocktail recipe for your Thirsty Thursday:

The Night Owl
One 1-inch piece of vanilla bean, split (or a splash of vanilla extract)
Orange zest
1/4 ounce simple syrup
2 dashes of orange bitters

Orange wheel

In a rocks glass, muddle the vanilla and orange zest with the simple syrup and bitters. Add the bourbon and ice, stir and garnish with an orange wheel.

Monday's This & That

So I'm getting ready for Halloween here at the Lounge...meanwhile, let's see what the heck is going on around the interwebs, with a special Halloween Costume Edition!

Do you dress up for Halloween? If so, what will you be?  It happens to be my favorite holiday, so I will of course be dressing up.  My closet is so full of costumes that the options are endless.  It looks like, for kids, "Frozen" is still holding the prize as most popular costume this year.

Subway is playing up on female insecurity in its new ad.  They say there was no ill-will intended, but the basic premise is that we all should be dressing slutty for Halloween, so their reasoning seems pretty paper thin.  I don't mind dressing up in a slutty costume (as my pictures have demonstrated), but I don't feel that you need to be a size 2 to do so.  And, by the way, Subway is one of the least "freshest" places to eat, so they really shouldn't be promoting any kind of fitness or weight-loss regimen anyway.  *end rant*

But for those of you who'd rather not whore it up for Halloween, there are plenty of alternatives for you!  I especially like costumes that you can make yourself.

...And just when you thought the Ice Bucket Challenge craze was over, there is -- of course! -- the Ice Bucket Challenge costume to stretch those 15-minutes even further.

Let me know what you'll be dressing up as in the comments!

Friday Photo Album: Working Girls

Here is the last in the series of my photo albums!  During the war, when I wasn't performing at the USO, I was a factory worker.  Here are some photos of the girls an' me at the factory!
It's tiring working at the plant, but I keep a smile on my face:

Friday Photo Album: World Travels

This week's photo album is from my travels around the world!  This was my lovely travel agent Rita.  Her services weren't the highest of caliber, but, hey - it was cheap:

Friday Photo Album: At the Pool

Summer is gone, so I thought for this week's photo album I'd share my time at the pool with my friends!

Here I am with Trish and Lyn.  My ass looks bangin' in this suit.  Too bad the other girls are so flat chested.

Happy Labor Day Weekend!

Happy Labor Day Weekend, Loungers!
Hopefully, I'll be spending most of it by the beach this weekend.
We'll be back Tuesday with a new "Bartending 101"!

Friday Photo Album: That One Party

Time for me to share another set of photos from my archives. Here's some photos from when Harriet hosted a party, and things got a little crazy.  First George and Harriet started that "Pass the Orange" game, where you essentially just look like you're making out:

Friday Photo Album: Those USO Days

You probably didn't know that during World War 2 I helped at the USO by entertaining the troops!  Well here are some pictures from those good ol' days.

Here is one of me standing with two soldiers from the 103rd regiment.

Cocktail Recipe Du Jour

It's been a stressful week, but we see the light at the end of the tunnel called Friday.  Here at the Lounge, we're doing a little housework and redecorating, getting ready for autumn. So I thought for Thirsty Thursday we could all relieve our woes with an Absolut Stress.

In a cocktail shaker pour Absolut vodka, dark rum, peach Schnapps, orange juice, and cranberry juice (about an ounce each).
Shake well.
Pour over ice in a tall glass.
Garnish with a slice of orange and a cherry.
Say "Aaahhhh" as the relaxation pours over you.

Cheers!

Sweepea's Book Review: Unbroken

Being a huge fan of anything about WWII, I was intrigued to read the novel "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption."  The book, written by Laura Hillenbrand, outlines the true story of Louis Zamperini and his extraordinary life from Olympic runner to POW to international hero.

To say this man's life is interesting is an understatement.  He basically should have died about 5 different times.  His suffering is remarkable, because he survived through it all.

As a boy, he was out of control, wreaking havoc throughout his neighborhood. As a teenager, his brother encouraged him to run, and in doing so, Lou discovered that focusing on his running diverted his energy from bad to good. When World War 2 hit, he joined the Army Air Forces.  It was here that his already amazing life took a dramatic turn in to adventure, danger, and survival.

Cocktail Recipe Du Jour

I'm out celebrating the beautiful summer days with a good ol' fashioned barbecue.  And in case you haven't noticed it's a Thirsty Thursday and time to try another cocktail o' the day!

Since baseball season is in full swing, let's really get in the mood.  You can go to Liquor.com, where have a whole section on great baseball drinks. Whether you're at the ballpark, watching the game at home, or just enjoying the backyard barbecue like I am, these drinks are great for the season.

Because I'm a vodka gal, I especially like the suggested Absolut Boston Homerun, and you don't even have to root for Boston to drink it.

Add ingredients to a highball glass filled with ice:
1 oz Absolut Boston Vodka
2 oz White grape juice
Splash of ginger ale

Cheers...now PLAY BALL!

Bloody Mary's!

It's Friday and it's happy hour, so we're looking for big things in the future.  Coming up this September for all you Bay Area folks is the Bloody Mary Festival.  The event will be held on Sunday, September 28 from 1 - 4 pm (expecting you to party hard Saturday, therefore needing the Bloody Marys). Tickets are selling fast, as the "early bird" price is already sold out.

If you've read my previous "BoozeQuest" on the subject of Bloody Mary's (on the now defunct site SorryIGotDrunk.com), you'd know that with extensive research I have become quite the Bloody Mary aficionado.  The Festival boasts an expert panel, yet I wasn't consulted.  But I'm sure they will have a great amount of discussion and debate over what makes a great Bloody Mary.

Wednesday's This & That

Happy Windsday! While I deal with this unusual weather, here's what's happening around the internet...

Slater, Missouri's fourth annual Steve McQueen Days begin April 24! Slater is the childhood home of actor Steve McQueen, and the annual event last two days. The schedule includes a Happy 80th Birthday Dinner Buffet, a car show and bike show, wine tasting, bike rodeo, and a Steve McQueen Memorial Highway Dedication. Learn more at www.cityofslater.com.

And eerily timed with the recent findings of what is believed to be Sean Flynn's remains, a movie based on Errol Flynn's son Sean will premiere at the Cannes Festival, entitled "The Road to Freedom." The remains found in Cambodia, where Sean last was seen, are still being verified by scientists.

And pictures have surfaced of Kate Winslet shooting the HBO remake "Mildred Pierce," the role originated by Joan Crawford.

Hopefully these news items send a chill up your skirt!
